Description

The work displays stylistic features typical of the sculptural language of northern Italy in the second half of the XVII century. The frontal setting interrupted by the elegant advance of the right leg, the arms open according to a theatrical eloquence, and especially the undulating drapery of the Virgin’s mantle, rich in deep and numerous “moves,” clearly lead back to the context of seventeenth-century Italy.
The stylistic features present some typically Po Valley elements, such as the remarkable realism found in the Virgin’s headdress and the Child’s thick hair associated with the formal elegances of the robe and the sweet, serene features of the faces that suggest its original location between Piedmont and Lombardy. Valuable is the gilding of the mantle where subtle geometric decorations skillfully alternate with elegant floral motifs; virtuous is the play of draperies that, from the feet up to the neck, follow one another in continuous undulations.
